Where did each player from the Pirates organization come from?  We map out everyone currently on the 40 man roster, back as far down the tree as we can get.

 

Pitchers

Erik Bedard  -  Signed as a Free Agent December 2011 – Contract lasts through 2012 season and can be a free agent at the end of the season.

A.J. Burnett  -  Acquired via trade with the New York Yankees on February 19, 2012 in exchange for Diego Moreno and Exicardo Cayones – Contract lasts through 2013 season and can be a free agent at the end of the 2013 season.

Kevin Correia  -   Signed as Free Agent in December 2010 – Two year contract lasts through 2012 season and can be a free agent at the end of the season.

Juan Cruz  -   Signed as a minor league free agent on February 1, 2012 and has his contract purchased by the Pirates on April 4, 2012 - One year contract lasts through 2012 season and can be a free agent at the end of the season.

Jason Grilli  -   Signed with the Pirates as a free agent in July 2011 – Current contract lasts through 2012 season and can be a free agent at the end of the season.

Joel Hanrahan -  Acquired in 2009 along with Lastings Milledge in a trade with Washington Nationals for Sean Burnett and Nyjer Morgan.  Current contract signed in January 2012 is through 2012 season, but Pirates control his rights through 2013 season.

Jared Hughes -   Acquired in MLB Draft in 2006 (4th round).  Under Pirates control through the 2016 season.

Jeff Karstens -   Acquired in 2008 trade with Yankees, along with Ross Ohlendorf, Jose Tabata and Daniel McCutchen in exchange for Damaso Marte (*acquired from Yankees in 2001 for Enrique Wilson) and Xavier Nady (*acquired from Mets in 2006 for Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez).  Karstens is playing 2012 under a 1 year contract, and is under team control for the 2013 season as well.  He will be a free agent going into the 2014 season.

Chris Leroux -   Acquired off waivers from Florida Marlins in September 2010, and is under team control for several more years.  He becomes arbitration eligible in 2014 and eligible for free agency in 2017.

Brad Lincoln -   Lincoln was a 1st round draft pick by the Pirates in the 2006 draft (#4 pick overall behind Luke Hochevar, Greg Reynolds and Evan Longoria, and a few spots ahead of Clayton Kershaw and Tim Lincecum).  Lincoln is under team control for several years, eligible for arbitration first in 2015 (potentially 2014 as a Super-Two player) and eligible for free agency in 2018.

Jeff Locke -   Acquired in 2009 trade, along with Charlie Morton and Gorkys Hernandez, from Atlanta Braves in exchange for Nate McLouth.  Locke made his MLB debut in 2011 and is under team control for several more years.  I believe he will be arbitration eligible in 2015 and free agent eligible in 2018.

Daniel McCutchen -   Acquired in 2008 trade with Yankees, along with Ross Ohlendorf, Jose Tabata and Jeff Karstens in exchange for Damaso Marte (*acquired from Yankees in 2001 for Enrique Wilson) and Xavier Nady (*acquired from Mets in 2006 for Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez).  McCutchen will not be eligible for arbitration until the 2014 season and not eligible for free agency until after the 2016 season.

James McDonald -   Acquired in trade with Dodgers in 2010, along with Andrew Lambo, in exchange for Octavio Dotel (*acquired as free agent in 2010).  McDonald will be arbitration eligible until the 2013 season and eligible for free agency after the 2015 season.

Kyle McPherson -   Drafted by the Pirates in the 14th round of the 2007 MLB draft.   McPherson has not yet reached the majors so he is obviously under team control for many more years.

Evan Meek -    Selected from the Tampa Bay Rays in the Rule 5 draft before the 2008 season, was placed on waivers and instead of being returned to Tampa, was traded to the Pirates in exchange for cash.   Meek is under Pirates control for three more full seasons, and cannot be a free agent until after the 2014 season.

Bryan Morris -   Morris was acquired, along with Andy LaRoche, Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss, from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the deal that sent Jason Bay to Boston.  As the other three players are all since removed from the organization, Morris is the only player remaining as the return from the Jason Bay trade.  Morris has yet to reach the majors and will be under team control for several years once we does.

Charlie Morton -   Acquired in 2009 trade, along with Jeff Locke and Gorkys Hernandez, from Atlanta Braves in exchange for Nate McLouth.  Morton was arbitration eligible for the first time this season and has signed a one year contract with the Pirates.  He can not be a free agent until after the 2014 season.

Daniel Moskos  -   Moskos was the Pirates’ 1st round draft pick (#4 overall) in the 2007 draft, taken after David Price, Mike Moustakas, and Josh Vitters and one spot ahead of Matt Wieters.  Moskos made his Pirates debut this past season and will be under team control for many, many more seasons.

Rudy Owens  -   Drafted by the Pirates in the 28th round of the 2006 draft.   Owens has not yet made his Pirates debut and will be under team control for many years once he arrives in Pittsburgh.

Chris Resop   -  Resop was claimed off of waivers from the Atlanta Braves in 2010.  He is under Pirates control until after the 2014 season, when he will be eligible for free agency.

Doug Slaten   -  Signed as a minor league free agent by Pirates on January 11, 2012.  Pirates purchased his contract on May 28, 2012.  He has a one year contract and can be a free agent at the end of the season.

Tony Watson   -   Drafted in the 9th round of the 2007 MLB draft by the Pirates.   Watson made his Pirates debut this past season and will be under team control for several more years, becoming arbitration eligible before the 2014 season.

Duke Welker   -   Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2007 MLB Draft, a few picks ahead of Mike Stanton of the Marlins and Freddie Freeman of the Braves.   Welker has not yet made his Pirates debut, and he will be under team control for several years once he arrives in Pittsburgh.

Justin Wilson  -   Drafted in the 5th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.   Wilson has not yet made his Pirates debut and will be under team control for several seasons.

 

Catchers

Rod Barajas  -   Barajas signed a one year free agent contract (with a club option for 2013) with the Pirates in December 2011.  There is no  buyout on the club option so it would be likely to be picked up.

Michael McKenry  -  Acquired from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations in June 2011, and is under team control until after the 2016 season.

 

Infielders

Pedro Alvarez   -  Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round of the 2008 MLB draft.   Alvarez reached the majors in 2010, and is under team control through the 2016 season.  He will be eligible for arbitration after the 2014 season.

Clint Barmes   – Signed a two year contract as a free agent with Pirates on November 21, 2011.  He is signed through the 2013 season and can be a free agent again at the end of that season.

Chase d’Arnaud   – Drafted by the Pirates in the 4th round of the 2008 draft.  d’Arnaud made his major league debut on June 24, 2011, and is under team control in the minor leagues through the 2014 season

Matt Hague   – Drafted by the Pirates in the 9th round of the 2008 draft, and made his Major League debut in 2012.  He is under team control for many more years.

Josh Harrison   – Was acquired in a trade (along with Kevin Hart and Jose Ascanio) with the Chicago Cubs for John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny.  He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2008 draft by the Cubs.  He is under team control through the 2016 season.

Garrett Jones   -Signed as a minor league free agent on December 16, 2008.  He is under team control through the 2015 season through arbitration.

Casey McGehee   - Acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for Jose Veras on December 12, 2011.  He is under team control through the 2014 season through arbitration.

Jordy Mercer  – Drafted by the Pirates in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft, and made his major league debut in 2012.  He is under team control for many more years.

Yamaico Navarro  – Acquired via trade with the Kansas City Royals on December 7, 2011 in exchange for Brooks Pounders and Diego Goris.  Navarro is under team control through the 2016 season.

Gustavo Nunez   - Selected by the Pirates in the Rule 5 draft on December 8, 2011.  He is on the 60 day DL and is under team control for many more years.

Neil Walker  – Drafted in the 1st round of the 2004 draft.  Walker is under team control through the 2016 season and will be entering his first year of arbitration next season.

 

Outfielders

Gorkys Hernandez   -   Acquired in 2009 trade, along with Jeff Locke and Charlie Morton, from Atlanta Braves in exchange for Nate McLouth.  Morton was arbitration eligible for the first time this season and has signed a one year contract with the Pirates.  He can not be a free agent until after the 2014 season.

Starling Marte   -  Signed as an international free agent in 2007 from the Dominican Republic.  Marte has not yet made his Pirates debut and will be under team control for several years once he has.

Andrew McCutchen   -  Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round of the 2005 draft (11th overall, after Ryan Braun and Troy Tulowitzki and one spot before Jay Bruce).  McCutchen will be eligible for arbitration after the 2012 season and will be eligible for free agency after the 2015 season.

Alex Presley   -  Drafted by the Pirates in the 8th round of the 2006 MLB Draft.  Presley made his Pirates debut in 2011 and will be under team control for several more seasons.

Jose Tabata  -  Acquired in 2008 trade with Yankees, along with Ross Ohlendorf, Jeff Karstens and Daniel McCutchen in exchange for Damaso Marte (*acquired from Yankees in 2001 for Enrique Wilson) and Xavier Nady (*acquired from Mets in 2006 for Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez).  Tabata has signed a long term extension with the Pirates that will keep him under contract through the 2016 season, with club options for 2017, 2018 and 2019.
